Letter from Colin Craig, Youth In Harmony Coordinator

Dear Cardinal District Brothers,

As members of the Cardinal District we share the distinct honor of sharing the heritage of many Gold Medal winning Choruses and Quartets who have called this District home. All we had to do was be a member and the associative honors became automatic. We also have the privilege of being free to pursue the same legendary paths as those before us, as we compete to become future Gold Medal Winners ourselves. All we have to do is focus on the goals of our chorus or quartet, work hard, sing well and enjoy the roar of applause from the convention audiences. There is a piece missing however that will eventually bring the roar of the crowd down to the applause of few close family members. That missing piece is investing in the future of Barbershop Harmony by offering the Art form to every high school student in the District. The single most effective means to do that are at our fingertips as the International Youth In Harmony project, and our own Cardinal District project, Harmony Explosion Camp.

As members of Cardinal, we have absolutely nothing limiting our ability to support the HX camp. In 2007 the charter members of the HX project brought the camp back to life and changed the lives of 45 young people. Those 45 kids are now solidly aware of the pure beauty of 4 part Barbershop Harmony, and the joy of performing in an Art form that is uniquely American, and created with 100% human talent and emotions.

The camp for 2008 is already coming into place, and it is up to the many loyal Chapters in the Cardinal District to ensure the future of Barbershop Harmony by investing in this camp. The goal of the camp coordinators is to have 75 students involved in 2008. To make this a reality, I am challenging every chapter in the Cardinal District to pledge $ 1,000.00 to the HX scholarship fund.

The simple beauty of this challenge is that it provides each chapter with a solid non-profit service project that can be the center of everything the chapter does during the year. It provides a solid reason to sell advertising, tickets, performances, and Singing Valentines, and Corporate Sponsorships. When we support the Harmony Explosion Camp we have the reason we need, to do every thing we do. And in the end we become the beneficiaries of this effort as the kids that we train today, will be coming into your chapters tomorrow to add to the sound that we all love so much, and their applause will be added to the roar of the crowd as we sing into the future with the pride and satisfaction that you did the right thing when you had the chance. Please contact Kurt Vogel, Terry Wence, Steve Albert or myself with any questions or suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you.
